Background of the Study
Cultural norms and traditional values play a significant role in shaping societal attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals. In Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, prevailing cultural beliefs and practices often contribute to the marginalization and stigmatization of LGBTQ+ communities (Chukwu, 2023). Conservative traditions, religious doctrines, and societal expectations create an environment where non-heteronormative identities are met with resistance and discrimination (Nwankwo, 2024). This study investigates the influence of cultural norms on the acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals, exploring how these norms affect social integration, legal recognition, and overall human rights. It examines both historical and contemporary perspectives to understand the evolution of attitudes towards LGBTQ+ communities in the region (Ike, 2025). The research aims to identify barriers to acceptance and propose pathways for fostering a more inclusive society.
Statement of the Problem
In Enugu East, entrenched cultural norms significantly hinder the acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to social exclusion and discrimination (Okoro, 2023). Despite growing global recognition of LGBTQ+ rights, local conservative beliefs and traditions continue to marginalize these communities, creating barriers to social inclusion and legal recognition. This persistent resistance limits the advancement of equal rights and opportunities. The study seeks to explore how cultural norms impede LGBTQ+ acceptance and to identify strategies that can foster greater inclusivity in the region (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the prevailing cultural norms in Enugu East.
To assess their impact on LGBTQ+ acceptance.
To recommend strategies for promoting inclusivity and equal rights.
Research Questions:
What cultural norms influence attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals in Enugu East?
How do these norms affect social and legal acceptance of LGBTQ+ communities?
What interventions can facilitate greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional cultural norms are negatively associated with LGBTQ+ acceptance.
Increased exposure to diverse perspectives will improve LGBTQ+ acceptance.
Educational and media interventions will positively influence societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ communities.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of cultural norms on LGBTQ+ acceptance, providing insights into the barriers to inclusivity in Enugu East. The findings will inform policy reforms, educational programs, and advocacy efforts aimed at promoting equal rights and social inclusion for LGBTQ+ individuals (Oke, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
